Short definition

A warehouse under customs control where imported merchandise can be held before entry for consumption. In the United States, goods entered for warehousing generally attract the duty rate in effect on withdrawal for consumption, subject to specific provisions. Withdrawal requires formalities and an estimated-duty deposit. COMEX approval does not establish the customs status of individual lots.
