Short definition

Compensation settled in, or based on, a company’s equity. Vesting and valuation depend on the plan. For equity-settled awards, the accounting expense is distinct from any cash spent on buybacks. A non-cash expense can coexist with dilution or with cash spent offsetting that dilution.
