A category’s share of a consumption basket
Short definition
Weight assigned to a category according to its share of covered consumption expenditure. CPI weights are updated each year and the indices are chained annually. In a fixed-period illustrative household basket, a category’s weight is its starting amount divided by total spending. Broad groups retain differences in the products bought within each category.
