International Emergency Economic Powers Act
freshreviewed 0 days ago
Short definition
A 1977 US law granting the president emergency economic powers in response to certain foreign-origin threats. It provides authority for sanctions and transaction restrictions. On February 20, 2026, the Supreme Court held that IEEPA does not authorize the president to impose tariffs. The ruling concerns IEEPA, not every other statutory basis for US tariffs.
