Equity dilution

A smaller ownership fraction

Private credit & markets

Short definition

A reduction in a shareholder’s fraction of outstanding shares when the total share count grows faster than that shareholder’s holding. An issuance can also bring cash or assets into the company. Its effect on investment value depends on the issue price and use of those resources; voting dilution depends on the rights of each share class.
